Casa del Cielo Residence

Fittingly Casa del Cielo translates to Sky House, and this Catalina Island, CA cottage sits as just that. Unobstructed views of the oceans, the canyons, and untouched hills of the island beyond Avalon, are in perfect sight from any position on the property. A retreat on this Southern California Island destination, this quiet, almost forgotten cottage original part of the old Wrigley Estate, has come back to life.

Vignettes of outdoor lounge chairs and fire pits sprawl around the meandering gardens of the property. Inside, the dining room and kitchen windows perfectly frame the ocean and hills. Warm white paint and distinct black mullion windows compliment the carved metal and preserved wood furniture. The Catalina Stone fireplace and wood beamed, crisp white shiplap ceiling elevates the natural light and the ocean air seeping in from the landscape outside.

The chef’s kitchen spares little for the imagination. Boasting panel ready Jenn‐Air and Bosch appliances and walnut and white Omega Cabinetry, the range wall sits proudly as the focal point to the open concept space, uniting the kitchen, living, and dining rooms. White Italian marble and black leathered granite countertops are used throughout the home along with thoughtfully located lighting which showcases the vaulted ceiling in the great room and the tapered ceilings in the bedrooms.

The mudroom was essential in maintaining the homes original charm. By turning the original kitchen space into a mixed‐use room for back‐of‐kitchen essentials, the homeowners gained a butler’s pantrywith views of the garden, space for meal prepping for events and doing everyday laundry. Warm stained wood floors lay throughout the main space and charcoal heated plank tile on the bathroom's floors add extra charm. Brizo plumbing fixtures and Toto toilets are the utility in the bath areas. Plush white carpet adorns the sleeping areas, while white barn doors and lighting add soft jewels to the otherwise rustic tone of the bedrooms.

This three-bedroom home is planned perfectly for weekend guests. The casita sits off the lower back deck and captures stunning views of the canyons, the hills, and the often‐frequented fox on the property’s large porch. Not accessible from the main house, the casita houses its own kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.

A private Dutch door off the casita kitchen and living room offer beautiful sunsets and cool breezes in the afternoon. White cabinets, black hardware, black leather granite countertops and Fisher Paykel appliances are compliments of the finishes in the main house.

Art throughout the entire home is both nostalgic of old Hollywood cowboy movies, and compliments of the island. This Catalina Island home is a true place of tranquility, charm, and accomplishment.
